how to tell if you need a wide shoe
I'm writing a blog post about buying wide shoes. We discuss what led me to the conclusion that people need a wide shoe to combat foot problems when wearing skinny shoes.

And, since I am an orthopedic surgeon, I am going to share with you my perspective on the science behind it.

If you're feeling pain or discomfort as a result of your shoe choice and have never tried a pair of wide shoes before, then this post will specifically address how and when you should consider getting some wider footwear.

I work from home in the morning and then go for bike rides in the afternoon. In the winter, I take a paddle boat daily for exercise. I live in a small apartment and don't like to wear high heels.

I don't like to go to the gym so I spend my free time lifting weights at home. My feet are normal size, with a wide foot; however, on my feet, I suffer from plantar fasciitis (inflammation of the band at the bottom of the foot) and bunions.

Though this post is primarily written for women, it is also relevant for men. The issues addressed apply to both genders but are mostly discussed by women.
Shoe size and width

Please note that shoe sizes are NOT uniform; they vary by manufacturer. One brand's size 7 can be larger or smaller than another brand's size 7. That said, each brand has a certain numerical range of sizes it produces.

A size 7 in one brand will be close to a size 7 in another brand even though not exact and the numerical difference between one shoe and another will vary by style.

This is why it is so important to try on a pair of shoes before buying them. The same goes for fit. If you have wide feet,

do not assume that any other pair of shoes labeled as "wide" will fit you any better than regular shoes (i.e. not wide).

Shoe widths are measured in millimeters. You are allowed to take a tape measure to the store and measure your feet together but most people don't.
Instead, they use the "slip on" method which is simpler. The step that requires you to need a second pair of hands is where you slip the shoes on your feet while standing in front of a mirror with yourself and the salesperson to help guide you.

If you get assistance, then the shoes should be slipped on with room for expansion laterally AND superiorly (your foot will expand slightly as it adapts).

If your shoes are too narrow, there will be a space between your heel and the back of the shoe which will cause irritation as you walk. (The salesperson is also looking out for this.)
